WSC Men lose to Oklahoma Baptist

Oklahoma Baptist drained 13 3-pointers and shot over 50 percent in both halves as the Bison cruised past Wayne State College 83-58 Saturday night to wrap up the Bison Conference Men’s Basketball Challenge in Shawnee, Oklahoma. OBU is now 2-0 while WSC drops to 0-5 with the loss.

Wayne State built an early lead in the first half at 18-11 on a Nate Mohr jumper with 13:23 to play before halftime.

The ‘Cats still held a 23-18 advantage at the11:14 mark until the host Bison went on a 16-2 run over a span of 4:49 to take a 34-25 lead on the Wildcats before finishing the first half with a 38-31 lead at the break.

The second half saw WSC get as close as five a pair of times until a big scoring surge by Oklahoma Baptist put the game out of reach midway through the second half.

WSC trailed 41-36 1:15 into the second half, then the Bison increased the lead again to double digits at 54-42 with 15:32 remaining.

The ‘Cats last run at the Bison got WSC within five at 54-49 following a Jordan Janssen jumper with 14:38 to play.

Oklahoma Baptist then outscored the ‘Cats 18-3 over the next seven minutes and took a commanding 72-52 lead before finishing the game with a 83-58 victory.

Wayne State shot just 35.8 percent for the game making 19 of 53 shots including 5 for 16 from 3-point range. The ‘Cats were 15 for 23 (65.2%) at the charity stripe.

Sophomore guard Nate Mohr led Wayne State with 15 points while Jordan Janssen and Al’Tavius Jackson each scored 11.

Oklahoma Baptist made 32 of 61 shots for 52.5 percent and connected on 13 of 24 3-pointers for 54.2 percent. The Bison were 6-7 at the free throw line.

Jaquan Simms led Oklahoma Baptist with 17 points followed by Rashad Lewis with 13 points. Jacque Brown and Dishon Lowery each added 10 points for the Bison.

OBU held a commanding 41-22 edge in rebounding with Henry Penner grabbing seven boards for WSC.

The Wildcats will play their home opener Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m. in Rice Auditorium hosting Nebraska Christian College.
